Roy Wyndham Godfrey was born in 1927 in Exeter, Devon, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for the county’s dramatic landscapes, especially Dartmoor, with its many ancient granite tors and earthy palette of iron red soils. It was by drawing and painting this specific countryside, that his artistic skills were honed.
A prolific painter, his works are primarily representational. Roy also produced prints, mainly of landscapes and natural forms, some of which hovers between the representational and the abstract.
An accomplished ceramicist, Roy produced over 300 pieces, the majority of his ceramics are thrown works, that are pictorially decorated with slips and brushwork, he experimented with a variety of techniques and more abstract styles, including raku.
